Research Strategy

We are conducting research to enhance communication within and across the pork supply chain. This research is targeted at producers and the general public to address consumer concerns about the pork production system, its sustainability, and the role pork plays in our society as a whole.

By asking tough questions about pork and pork production, we are creating solutions that address consumer concerns and shaping an industry the public trusts.

The Real Pork Trust Consortium engages in research spanning the entire pork system – from animal nutrition, animal behavior, the life cycle of pigs, animal welfare, and veterinary medicine to meat science, food safety, human nutrition, and environmental impact.

Research Strategies

Our pork research incorporates the following:

Investigating how pork producers’ and packers’ perceptions of the pork brand, labeling, and procedures differ from consumers’ perceptions.

Better define connections between people, pigs, plants, and their shared environment and make recommendations through a systems thinking approach.

Exploring the opinions of consumer markets with the least amount of trust in pork to understand concerns.

Conducting analyses of current communication about the welfare and sustainability of raising pigs.

Diving into life cycle assessments of pork production’s environmental impact based on distinct factors across geographic areas.
